A ceiling fan looks simple until you remember it is a spinning weight hanging over your head, wired into your home and wobbling a little more every year if it was mounted wrong. The two things that matter most are a fan-rated box that is anchored to structure and clean, correct wiring at the switch. Our licensed and insured electricians handle both, whether you are swapping an old fan, replacing a light fixture with a fan, or adding a fan where none has ever been. We install ceiling fans across Toronto and the GTA, including Mississauga, Brampton, North York, Oakville, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, Markham and Vaughan. We see every situation: a bedroom that only has a light box rated for a fixture, not a fan; a great room with a sloped or cathedral ceiling that needs the right downrod and a sloped-ceiling adapter; a two-storey foyer where the fan is fifteen feet up; and older homes where there is no existing ceiling box at all and a new one has to be fished in. Every installation uses a UL/CSA-listed fan-rated support box, follows the manufacturer instructions and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and is balanced so it runs quietly. Signs you may need this service

  • Your current fan wobbles, hums, clicks or has started to droop at the mount
  • You want a fan where there is only a light fixture, or only a bare ceiling
  • The ceiling box is plastic or shallow and clearly not rated to carry a fan
  • You have a sloped, cathedral or very high ceiling and are not sure it can be done
  • There is no wall switch, or only one switch for both the fan and its light
  • A previous install left the fan running rough, noisy or controlled awkwardly

How it works / what to expect

We start by checking what is above the ceiling: is there an existing box, is it fan-rated, and is it fastened to a joist or just to drywall. A standard fixture box is not built to hold a moving fan, so if needed we install a proper fan-rated box, often a brace-bar type that spans between joists, anchored to structure. From there we assemble and hang the fan per the manufacturer instructions, set the correct downrod length for your ceiling height, wire the motor and light, and configure the switch or remote you want. Then we balance the blades so it runs smooth and quiet at every speed. A straightforward replacement on an existing fan-rated box is usually under an hour or two; new locations, sloped ceilings and high foyers take longer because of the box work and access.

Cost factors in the GTA

The biggest cost driver is not the fan, it is what is already in the ceiling. A like-for-like swap onto an existing fan-rated box is the quickest and least expensive job. Replacing a non-rated box, or adding a brand-new location where wiring has to be fished from a switch and a box mounted to structure, takes more time and may mean opening and patching drywall. Ceiling height and slope add cost: a high foyer or stairwell needs scaffolding or tall ladders and extra care, and sloped ceilings need a specific adapter and downrod. Adding separate switch control or a remote receiver where there was only a single switch is additional. Fan weight and reach also matter. We assess on site and give a clear price before starting; prices vary by job, so we do not quote blind.

Frequently asked questions

Can a ceiling fan go on my existing light fixture box?
Only if that box is rated to support a fan and is anchored to structure, and most standard light fixture boxes are not. A fan moves and vibrates, so the Ontario code and fan manufacturers require a fan-rated box. We check what is there and, if it is not rated, install a proper fan-rated support box, often a brace bar between the joists, so the fan is held safely.
Can you install a fan on a sloped or very high ceiling?
Yes. Sloped and cathedral ceilings need a sloped-ceiling adapter and the correct downrod length so the fan hangs level with proper blade clearance. High foyers and stairwells are handled with appropriate access equipment. These installs take more time than a standard one, and we confirm the approach and price on site.
There is no wiring or box where I want the fan. Can you still do it?
Usually, yes. We can fish wiring from a nearby switch or circuit and mount a new fan-rated box anchored to structure. How involved it is depends on what is above the ceiling and whether there is attic access; finished ceilings with no access may need a small amount of drywall opening and patching. We will explain what your specific ceiling requires.
Why does my old fan wobble, and can a new install fix it?
Wobble usually comes from a box that is not securely fastened, a bent blade or blade arm, or blades that are out of balance. A fan mounted to a non-rated or loose box will wobble and can eventually pull free, which is unsafe. A proper install on a secured fan-rated box, with the blades balanced, runs smooth and quiet. Call (289) 799-3802 if your current fan is shaking.
